Microprocessor & hydraulic knee joints
Knee joints that read sensors thousands of times per second and modulate resistance for stance stability, smooth swing and safe descent of slopes and stairs.
Indications
- Transfemoral amputation, mobility grade K2–K4
- Users who want outdoor, varied-terrain walking
- Older users needing fall protection
- Bilateral amputees needing high safety margin
Key features
- Angle, moment and acceleration sensors
- Hydraulic or magnetorheological resistance controlled in real time
- Standing mode and cycling/activity modes
- Stumble recovery, multi-day battery
- Tuning and updates via an app
A traditional mechanical knee has a fixed resistance characteristic, forcing the user to walk at one speed and to be very cautious downhill. A microprocessor knee changes this by measuring the situation and modulating resistance instantly.
In stance it raises resistance so the knee will not collapse even before the body's centre of mass passes the knee axis — a key fall-protection feature, especially for older and bilateral users.
In swing it releases resistance at the right moment so the shank swings naturally across a range of walking speeds. Many models have a soft standing lock and dedicated modes for cycling or driving.
We assess mobility level, weight, living environment and maintenance access to advise between a mechanical hydraulic knee and a microprocessor knee, with a matching training plan.
